Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown is a fan of Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa but claims that some of the things his side is doing are “crazy”.
He also revealed that it “amazes” him that all the Leeds players seem to know exactly what they’re doing, despite being asked to do so many different things, and named Stuart Dallas as the prime example.
Keown was talking on the Jim White Show (talkSPORT, Friday, 12pm).
“I’m a fan [of Bielsa]”, Keown said. “He’s thought-provoking, pushing the boundary with tactics like we’ve never seen before.
“However, the number of goals they’ve conceded this season, the most in the league, some of the things they’re doing are crazy.
“The thing that amazes me is that all the players seem to know exactly what they’re doing, whether it’s the right thing or not to win a game of football, but they stick to it, they know exactly what they’re doing.
“Stuart Dallas, for example, I’ve seen him play left-back, left-sided midfield, right-sided midfield, right-back. He’s been asked to play everywhere and it’s all seamless.”
Tighten the belt
Leeds United built their Championship-winning season on a tight defence – the best in the division.
This season is a complete contrast. Leeds might have 10 points and be sitting in relative safety but no team has conceded more goals.
17 goals conceded in eight games is a real worry and that’s what Bielsa will be focussing on in the international break.
Leeds have thrilled with their attacking verve this season but an xG of 1.79 and an xGA of 2.07 tell the story of the season so far. [WyScout]
The other worry is the next three games – Arsenal, Everton and Chelsea.
However, we always knew things weren’t going to be easy in the Premier League and we never got carried away by the scintillating start to the season.
