Marcelo Bielsa accuses journalist of Leeds United sack question

Marcelo Bielsa asked a journalist ahead of the Leeds United v Arsenal game whether he was suggesting that he fears being sacked.

The Argentine suffered the biggest managerial defeat of his career against Manchester City when the Whites were humiliated 7-0.

In the pre-match press conference, a journalist hinted that this was the first time during his Leeds tenure that he had been challenged in such a manner.

He said, “It was a heavy defeat against City and you have not been winning a lot of games while earlier you were. Is this the first time you have been put to the test?”

Bielsa then questioned him, “Are you asking if I’m in fear of being sacked?” and the journalist responded, “No. I’m just wondering is it a different test now that the team is not winning a lot compared to when they were winning a lot. Is that making it more difficult?.”

To this, Bielsa replied, “Of course this moment is the worst of all I’ve had at Leeds and to lose 7-0 is not just another defeat. You could also look at it that the performances before the defeat was our best segment so far.”

Pretty bizarre

This exchange seemed pretty tetchy and it looked like the journalist meant to ask him exactly that, but in a nicer way.

Bielsa did admit that it was his lowest point at Leeds and that does mean that he’s feeling the pressure.

Wins and losses are part and parcel of the game, but to lose 7-0 is not acceptable and can have a damaging effect on the dressing room.

There is nothing to suggest yet that he’s lost the trust of the players, but he’s got to pull out something extraordinary to get this side playing the way they did last season.

He’s known to be someone capable of reinventing himself and we believe that he will succeed at Elland Road.

Hopefully, the change in fortune begins with an impressive win against Arsenal who’ve recently moved into the top four.
