‘Awful’, ‘Dreadful’, ‘Stinker’ – Many England fans react to Kalvin Phillips at FT v Wales

Leeds United midfielder Kalvin Phillips made it consecutive starts for England on Thursday evening at Wembley against Wales.

Gareth Southgate once again went for his 3-5-2 formation, leading to Phillips partnering Tottenham player Harry Winks in midfield.

Tyler Roberts also featured in the game, and there were a number of clashes between the two – all light-hearted and good to see, though.

Phillips is much used to playing in the holding role by himself and has forged that into his own, creating a quarterback styled-position under Marcelo Bielsa.

Under Southgate, the Yorkshire Pirlo is starved of possession and has less responsibility in the England side – meaning he is much quieter for the Three Lions.

The 24-year-old made a number of key passes, switching play with ease when Wales were pressing high through the middle of the pitch.

Phillips had less defensive work required of him at Wembley, and that is where the majority of his best work is completed – one quiet night doesn’t mean it was a bad one.

Many England fans shared their opinion on Phillips, with the majority of those having a different opinion, claiming he is nowhere near good enough to play internationally.

This is despite Phillips outperforming Declan Rice in every department during his last outing against Denmark last month.

Some of those fans claimed that they couldn’t believe Phillips was called-up, nevermind starting another game for the Three Lions.
