Major boost for Leeds promotion bid as EFL delivers critical Saturday update

The EFL has given Championship clubs the green light to move to phase 3 of their training protocols from Saturday, and it means that Leeds United can now play 11 v 11 matches and pre-restart friendlies.

It’s the last move before a return to action in the Championship a fortnight today, with Leeds set to face Cardiff in the first of their remaining nine games.

Telegraph journalist John Percy confirmed that Leeds’ title rivals West Brom and Premier League side Aston Villa would be playing a friendly on Saturday.

And on the Friday Football Social on the BBC, Reading midfielder Charlie Adam confirmed that his side could play 11 v 11 matches from Saturday onwards.

There’s been no word from Leeds about any friendlies but we’d be incredibly surprised if Marcelo Bielsa isn’t planning a couple of stern tests for his players.

West Brom are heading to their rivals on Saturday afternoon and it’s been reported that they’re going to take two teams, with possibly two one-hour matches to take place.

This makes a lot of sense. With the increased risk of injury when the Championship restarts, Bielsa might have to look deep into the Under-23s for cover.

Using a large group of players isn’t his way but these are different times and we could see some unusual faces lining up for Leeds if injuries or positive tests mount up.

If Leeds do announce friendlies, it’s likely to be against local sides.

If Bielsa wants top-flight opposition and the EFL rules are the same as the Premier League (teams can travel no more than 90 minutes for friendlies), then he can choose from Everton, Liverpool, Manchester City, Manchester United, Burnley and Sheffield United.

Even though West Brom are playing their rivals, we can’t see Leeds taking on Man United. That’s a proper rivalry and neither side needs that ahead of the seasons starting.

That can save for next season.
