Live from Elland Road: 22y/o peerless in the Championship and superb again for Leeds v Blackburn

Leeds United have got the best defence in the league – despite conceding today in a 2-1 win – and while football isn’t a one-player game, Ben White has to take a huge amount of credit.

Coming to Leeds with just a couple of EFL games and Leagues 1 & 2 experience in his bag, White has now played 90 minutes in every single Championship game this season.

Not only that, he’s arguably been the best player on the pitch for some of these – and if not the best, certainly the most composed.

We can count on one hand the number of obvious mistakes he’s made and he was at his best again on Saturday afternoon.

Defenders rarely get the plaudits in a team, although there are exceptions… Virgil van Dijk has been credited with turning Liverpool into a title-winning team at the back.

Leeds fans think the same about Ben White and if you watch him play live, you’ll realise why.

These are the sort of plaudits that he’s getting at the moment and we’re totally on board with this, although a notch above Kalvin Phillips? Hang on a sec…

However, for a 22-year-old with his experience, White is exceptional at positioning, anticipating trouble and he never ever seems to get in a flap.

While other Leeds players were giving the ball away today, with Luke Ayling, Jack Harrison and Kalvin Phillips all guilty, White just went about his job and kept on snuffing out any threat from Blackburn.

Best defender in the Championship? It’s a brave person that puts someone else alongside White at the moment. He’s a better all-round player than Pontus Jansson, although the Swede does have his strengths. Few Leeds supporters would take a swap now, though, if they could have either player on a permanent deal.

The secret is out of the bag, however. Lots of teams, including (obviously) Brighton, know just how good White is and Leeds are either going to struggle to sign him permanently in the summer or end up paying handsomely for his services. Hopefully, it’s the latter.
