Leeds United centre-back Liam Cooper misses the game against Liverpool tonight after suffering a calf injury.

Rumours of his injury were swirling around Twitter on Friday and they proved to be correct, with Pascal Struijk stepping up to partner new signing Robin Koch in the centre of defence.

Cooper took to Twitter to put a message out ahead of the 5.30pm kick-off and it’s an agonising one to read for Leeds fans.

Cooper said, “Gutted would be an understatement. I dreamt about this day… Today came too soon but I’m here to support the boys through our return to the @premierleague. Be loud and proud from home! MOT”

We’re absolutely gutted for Cooper.

He’s deserved the right to lead Leeds United out onto the pitch at Anfield tonight after two brilliant seasons under Marcelo Bielsa.

He was fine when he came back from the international break but picked up a calf issue and despite a late fitness test, today’s game has come too soon for him.

It also proves that Leeds are too light at the back and another centre-back is needed before the window closes.

Pascal Struijk put in a good shift last season but we think the 21-year-old is too inexperienced to go up against the Liverpool power three.

We’d love to be proved wrong but we can’t help but fear the worst with Jurgen Klopp naming a very strong Liverpool line-up.

Hopefully, Struijk makes us eat our words, but if Bielsa wasn’t convinced about the need for a new centre-back before, we think he will be now.
