JJ Watt, NFL superstar with the Houston Texans, is also a Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa fan.

The defensive end tweeted on Sunday to show he was enjoying the Chelsea v Tottenham game at home saying, “Premier League weekends” and adding a ‘hands in the air’ emoji.

A Leeds fan replied to him saying, “Shame you missed the Leeds match.”

The reply from Watt was brilliant.

He tweeted back saying, “I didn’t. Love watching Leeds play. Bielsa the legend. Very much hoping there’s a Season Two of “Take Us Home.”

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani got involved and replied to Watt saying, “JJ, number 99 XL is on the way.”

Watt plays at #99 for the Houston Texans.

All Leeds aren’t we

We can add JJ Watt to a growing list of celebrity fans who support Leeds, that also includes Russell Crowe, Nick Faldo, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Mel B.

Crowe was the narrator in the Amazon documentary that Watt mentioned and he’ll be glad to know there is a Season 2 already out, albeit a truncated one.

This is all fairly light-hearted stuff but there is a serious business point behind this.

Leeds have hooked up with Jay Z’s Roc Nation agency in a bid to grow the club as a global force.

That’s a crucial part of Radrizzani’s plan to turn Leeds back into a world-beating Champions League side.

Picking up fans like Watt and seeing him put out tweets like this will help grow the Leeds brand in other territories and Radrizzani must have been delighted when he saw it.

If he can get a pic of Watt wearing the Leeds #99 shirt then it will be the sort of PR that he’s paying Jay Z a lot of money for.

The jury is out on that decision but one thing is certain – Bielsa has done more to grow the Leeds brand than anyone else in the last 20 years.
