Leeds v Luton referee to cringe for years after what he did at Elland Road
Graham Smyth was in hysterics after referee Sam Allison was left red-faced before the clash between Leeds United and Luton Town had even kicked off.
The Whites beat the Hatters 3-0 in their Championship clash on Wednesday (27 November), but the fun seemingly already started.
Sam Allison smiled and grinned at fans thinking they were shouting his name, only for him to turn around and see fellow Sam, Leeds ace Byram, standing behind him.
Reporting via his personal X account (27 November), Smyth shared more details on the pre-match moment.
“Hahahaha. Referee Sam Allison just turned to the front of the West Stand to grin and give a thumbs up to someone calling his name,” he wrote.
“The grin faded slightly as it dawned on him that Sam Byram was right behind him. He’ll be awake at night cringing at that years from now”.
Daniel Farke has found his Leeds United team in a good run of form
Leeds are now at the top of the Championship table and have been one of the best teams in the second-tier by some distance this season.
Of course, their summer arrivals have no doubt improved their chances of gaining Premier League promotion but up until recently, aside from Joe Rodon, none of the other newbies had as much of an impact as many would’ve likely hoped.
The Whites are one of the favourites to go up automatically this season, and after their performance against Luton, it’s clear to see why.
Daniel Farke’s way of playing may bore some Whites fans but the fact that the club are getting consistent results and more often than not dominating each opponent they face, it feels like the German should be cut some slack.
Only time will tell whether Leeds will regain their Premier League status but if their form continues on this sort of trajectory, it’s hard to see how they won’t be in the top flight next season.
As for the referee, this is one moment he will not want to be reminded about.
