Leeds United v Sheff Wed: BBC Sheffield commentator reacts to ‘Disastrous’ moment

Rob Staton labelled Sheffield Wednesday’s start to the afternoon as “disastrous” after Leeds United scored just three minutes into the game.

It was Manor Solomon who put his side ahead after just minutes, although he was gifted by Wednesday goalkeeper James Beadle who looked shakey and parried the ball into Solomon’s path.

A 3-0 win at Elland Road on Sunday (19 January) after Largie Ramazani and Ao Tanaka added to the goal tally in the 88th and 96th minutes means the Whites retain their position at the top of the Championship.

Speaking live on BBC Radio Sheffield (19 January, 12:07), commentator Staton argued that the Owls were their own worst enemies as he said: “It is a disastrous start so far for Sheffield Wednesday.

“It is a simple ball into the box and James Beadle comes out and spills it straight to Leeds. He should be keeping hold of it. You have to be able to deal with those simple balls into the box and if you come for the ball, you have to keep it.

“Definitely not part of the plan for Wednesday.”

Wednesday gave Leeds an ideal start to the afternoon and although Beadle certainly should have done better and caught the ball, Daniel Farke won’t have minded how the goal came about.

The Whites struggled to take full advantage of their early lead against the Owls and will surely have wanted to be in a bit of a safer position at half-time rather than still just a goal ahead.

Ramazani was able to add to his side’s efforts in the second half after showing tenacity in his play to keep the ball and find the goal which killed the game off before Tanaka was able to add a final blow just before the full-time whistle.

Nevertheless, the West Yorkshire outfit will have been pleased to come away with all three points from the game to keep them in pole position in the league.

A trip to Norwich lies ahead on Wednesday (22 January) and Farke will be returning to his former club in the hope that his side can start to build off the victory and put together a string of wins going forward.

In other Leeds United news, Farke will be on red alert to sign a Premier League ace after a manager’s transfer admission.
