Leeds United confirmed XI v Portsmouth: Mateo Joseph decision made, one new face starts
Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has named his starting line-up for the Championship clash with Portsmouth at Elland Road.
The Whites take on the newly promoted side at Elland Road on Saturday (10 August) in their opening game of the 2024-25 campaign.
Farke had a number of big selection calls to make after a busy summer to date, with the line-up being confirmed by the club’s official X account [10 October].
Mateo Joseph handed full Leeds United league debut
Arguably the biggest selection call for Farke to make was who would lead the line against Portsmouth.
Joseph put himself in surprise contention after starring in pre-season and he gets the nod ahead of the benched Joel Piroe and Patrick Bamford.
It means a full league debut for Joseph, some two-and-a-half years after arriving at Elland Road.
One of Leeds’ summer signings is selected, with Jayden Bogle coming into defence.
Farke had a fully-fit squad to choose from, meaning a packed bench that includes Sam Byram, Max Wober, Brenden Aaronson and the aforementioned Piroe and Bamford.
Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon, the latter of whom joined permanently in the summer, unsurprisingly get the nod in defence.
All eyes will very much be on Joseph, who many wanted to start. It is now down to the striker to prove that Farke was right with his big call.
