Leeds United post official message about Championship restart date – promotion bid back on
Leeds United fans got some very good news on Sunday night – and not before time.
On its official Twitter page, Leeds sent notice that the EFL had agreed “provisionally” to restart the season on June 20.
It will depend on safety provisions but it’s a huge boost for Leeds and its bid to win promotion on the pitch.
Leeds sent the tweet on Sunday night and linked to the official EFL statement.
The detail set out that it’s dependent on meeting government guidelines and also getting clearance from the local authorities to play at stadiums.
That shows that the EFL is planning to play games at Elland Road, at least to start with.
This is where Leeds fans need to step up and prove that, despite so much being on the line, they can stay away.
Hopefully, the fact that every game is set to be broadcast will help here but it’s so important that Leeds fans set an example.
That comes from an obvious safety point of view but also to ensure that the team can try to win promotion and/or the title at Elland Road.
Leeds’ fixtures have been deemed as “high-risk”, along with Liverpool, in a report in the Times and any signs of fans congregating in the early fixtures could see our games switched to neutral venues.
That would just feel all kinds of wrong.
The EFL statement also said they were considering squads of 20 and use of five substitutes, and set an end date to the season with the play-offs set for July 30. The upshot is that Leeds will find out if they’re playing in the Premier League over the course of the next couple of months.
And the nerves are already starting to kick in.
