Leeds United: Neil Redfearn blown away by what ‘fantastic’ Archie Gray did v Sheffield Wednesday

Leeds United gem Archie Gray blew Neil Redfearn away with his “absolutely fantastic” performance from right-back against Sheffield Wednesday.

Daniel Farke’s side climbed back into the Championship’s automatic promotion places with a 2-0win over the Owls at Hillsborough on Friday (8 March) thanks to goals from Patrick Bamford and Wilfried Gnonto.

While the 17-year-old Gray was once again deployed out of position at full-back, he impressed former Leeds boss Redfearn with his “amazing” versatility who suggested he could play at right-back “stood on his head”.

Speaking on talkSPORT on Friday (8 March, 20:06) he said: “It is an absolutely amazing achievement. Obviously, there is great history with the Gray family at Leeds United and he’s been absolutely fantastic Archie Gray.

“I’ve seen him on a number of occasions now and he doesn’t play like an 18-year-old he plays like a seasoned pro. Great feet, and great awareness. He’s got a good touch and can get out of tight situations well.

“Playing full-back, he’s obviously a central midfielder but he can play that full-back position stood on his head, to be honest.”

Will Leeds United keep Archie Gray during the summer transfer window?

There have been few players who have been more impressive in a Leeds shirt this season than Gray who has gone from strength to strength this season, whether he has been deployed in the middle of the park or at right-back.

His performance against Chelsea in the FA Cup clash at Stamford Bridge made him look like a Premier League player in waiting and that could well make it hard for Leeds to keep him at Elland Road beyond the end of the season.

Teams both in England’s top flight and beyond have been monitoring the teenager ahead of the summer transfer window. While the Whites have tied him down to a new deal, that may not be enough to secure his long-term future.

Hopefully, he will be playing under Farke’s management in the Premier League if the Whites win promotion this season. If Leeds miss out on promotion it could prove to be costly in more ways than one.
