Leeds United: Mason Mount speaks to Sky Sports about Daniel James red card
Mason Mount admits he didn’t see Daniel James’ red-card challenge as Chelsea beat Leeds United at Elland Road on Wednesday night (11 May).
James, 24, was shown a straight red card in the 24th minute for a dangerous tackle on Mateo Kovacic.
After the game, ex-Derby loanee Mount was asked about the sending off but he didn’t realise it was going to lead to a red card.
“I didn’t see it,” said Mount on Sky Sports Main Event after the game [11 May, 09:38pm].
He added: “When the tackle was made, I just saw Kov on the floor after. I didn’t know the ref was going to give a ref.
“As I say, I didn’t see the tackle but it’s a tough one for them.”
Taylor was spot on to send James off.
It was right in front of him and he didn’t hesitate.
Kovacic went off injured in the end but if his leg was planted when James went in on him, he could have been leaving Elland Road in an ambulance.
It’s irrelevant that James won the ball first – he endangered an opposition player and that merits a red card and a three-match ban.
James’ season is over now.
He joins Luke Ayling in the naughty corner for getting stupid red cards in the last two games when the Whites are already plagued by massive injury issues.
Stuart Dallas, Adam Forshaw and Tyler Roberts are also out of the last two games due to injuries while it’s unlikely that Patrick Bamford will be fit enough to even start against Brighton and Brentford.
What a mess it is.
Leeds can only blame themselves for this mess too because they should have signed more players last summer and more players in January.
With that, the buck stops with the hierarchy.
It’s not good enough.
