Leeds United: Glenn Murray gushes over ‘exceptional’ Archie Gray after loss v Chelsea

Glenn Murray could not believe what he was seeing as Archie Gray shone for Leeds United in the late 3-2 defeat against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

The former Brighton striker was left stunned by the 17-year-old who he could not help but praise after he stepped up despite the late defeat.

Gray has been one of the standout performers at Elland Road this season, but a display like that against Premier League opposition will certainly set tongues wagging.

Murray was commentating live on BBC Radio 5 [28 February, 20:52] as he gushed: “This boy is absolutely magic. He’s the last man for Leeds, nips past Jackson, goes past Sterling, he just doesn’t realise the stakes, the young man.

“He just plays like someone way beyond his years. His understanding of the game is exceptional, his bravery and just that youthful exuberance. When you’ve got 5,000 Leeds fans singing your name, it’s a positive.”

Archie Gray shines yet again for Leeds United v Chelsea

Gray has been an absolute revelation at Elland Road this season, taking the step up to senior football like a duck to water no matter what position he is asked to play in or which role he is expected to fulfil under Farke’s leadership.

Moving back into his natural centre-midfield position against Chelsea, it was like he had never left it. Often tasked with a role at right-back, he proved yet again why he remains a viable option for one of the two deep midfield spots.

Despite a late goal from Conor Gallagher which sealed the defeat for Leeds, Murray’s delight over Gray’s performance proves how well Leeds performed and how the 17-year-old stepped up.

An eventual 3-2 defeat would have been a frustrating one, especially coming so late in the game, but it was a performance for Leeds to be proud of.

Gray’s performances have caught the eye of watching clubs, the likes of Liverpool and Crystal Palace, who are unlikely to have been deterred by that display against Premier League opponents.
