Leeds United fans’ chant at Elland Road shared after what Ipswich Town did

BBC Sport reporter Ian Woodcock has shared what Leeds United supporters chanted after Ipswich Town killed off their top-two hopes.

Leeds needed to beat Southampton at Elland Road on Saturday (4 May) and hope that Ipswich slipped up against Huddersfield Town.

It soon became apparent that Ipswich were not going to read off United’s script, though, as Wes Burns put them ahead after 27 minutes.

The Whites were drawing 1-1 with Southampton at that point, but fans had already accepted their fate at that point.

“News of Town taking the lead against the Terriers earlier was greeted with some chants of ‘We’re the famous Leeds United and we’re going to Wembley’,” Woodcock told BBC’s live blog [4 May, 1:42pm].

Leeds United must settle for Championship play-offs

Leeds had their automatic promotion dreams in their own hands not so long ago, but a bad patch of form at the wrong time ultimately cost them.

Daniel Farke’s men were always going to have their work cut out on the final day, and so that proved as there was to be no remarkable turnaround.

It means Leeds must now prepare themselves for the play-offs, which will hopefully culminate in a trip to Wembley, as chanted by the supporters.

If the past few weeks have taught us anything, however, it is that no team can be taken for granted and Leeds simply cannot take their eye off the prize.

Nobody said it was going to be easy, and now it is a case of strapping ourselves in and preparing for the drama that the play-offs provide.
