Leeds United fans boo again after what they saw in 2-0 win v Cardiff City

Ilia Gruev and Junior Firpo were met with groans and boos from Leeds United fans after negative play against Cardiff on Saturday 21 September.

Yorkshire Evening Post journalist Graham Smyth posted on X (21 September) after he heard fans “groaning in frustration” late in the second half of the Whites’ 2-0 win.

Largie Ramazani’s first-half goal had given Daniel Farke’s side the advantage, but after Pascal Struijk missed a penalty and Farke failed to make any changes before the 75th minute, fans were not happy.

Before Joel Piroe coming on to seal the win, Smyth said: “Still no sign of a change from Leeds – away end just groaned in frustration as Gruev went backwards.

“Now they’re booing as Firpo goes backwards.”

Daniel Farke makes Leeds United fans wait to celebrate

Although the Whites were firmly in control of the match from almost start to finish, a lack of movement from the sidelines until deep in the second half isn’t what fans want to see.

Piroe popping up in the 87th minute does go some way towards justifying Farke’s cautious approach, but fans will point to the fact that United should have been well clear much earlier on.

They may well have been if Struijk’s penalty had found the back of the net in the 67th minute – providing a break in play for Farke to make changes – but Jak Alnwick’s save kept 10-man Cardiff in the contest.

Groans from the away end towards Gruev and Firpo don’t necessarily single out the pair as players who should come out of the side, but are instead reflective of some fans’ frustration with Farke’s football.

However, with three points in the bag, as the Whites return to West Yorkshire, Farke will be very pleased with his work as United get back to winning ways.

In other Leeds United news, Farke got one call spot-on after giving a new Whites signing his full debut at the Cardiff City Stadium.
