Five players ruled out as Marsch shares update – Leeds United early team news v Southampton

Jesse Marsch shared an injury update on the Leeds United squad ahead of their clash with Southampton at Elland Road on Saturday.

Leo Hjelde, Junior Firpo and Jamie Shackleton all seem to be getting closer to full fitness ahead of the game.

However, it seems as though they – and Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts – will miss the game against the Saints this weekend.

Speaking to the media today [31 March], Marsch shared the positive news.

“Leo [Hjelde] – back in training a little this week. Unavailable weekend, but close,” said Marsch, as quoted by LeedsLive.

“Junior getting closer.

“Shackleton calf injury, but back on the pitch on his own.

“Roberts looking good and feeling good. Surgery success for next season.”

Momentum

There’s going to be one big question on the mind of most Leeds fans ahead of this game against Southampton. Can the Whites continue their form from before the international break?

Going into their meeting with the Saints, United have two wins from two.

Both victories were completed in dramatic fashion in stoppage time so we’ll be hoping for a win that’s a lot easier on the heart this weekend when Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side is in town.

Southampton have been in poor form lately.

Before they were knocked out of the FA Cup by Manchester City in their last game before the international break, the Saints had lost to Watford, Newcastle and Aston Villa.

They will have been happy to have had that two-week break to reset and readjust whereas, with Leeds, we’ve had two weeks where the players have been itching to get back into action.

Marsch has had a bit more time with his players to get them up to speed with his way of thinking, which is also an advantage for the Whites’ new American manager.

This should be a good game and one we feel we should win.
