Leeds United duo Luke Ayling and Illan Meslier slammed by journalist for 'inexplicably' allowing Fulham equaliser
After taking an early lead against Fulham, Leeds United lasted just six minutes before Aleksandar Mitrovic struck the visitors level.
In what many are viewing as a must-win match, Leeds got off to a fantastic start as Rodrigo headed the hosts in front after 20 minutes.
But arch-enemy Mitrovic scored yet another goal against Leeds from a corner just six minutes later. Journalist Beren Cross pointed the finger at Illan Meslier and Luke Ayling for their poor defending.
Via Twitter, Cross said: “Ayling lets him [Mitrovic] get in front of him inexplicably and Meslier has to do better.
“Header did not have much pace on it. So poor and the most obvious way for Fulham to score.”
From Leeds’ start against Fulham, it was obvious that the players understood the importance of the match. The Whites were quick off the block and challenging for every ball, and were rewarded for their efforts with an early goal.
But the issues that have plagued Leeds all season popped back up, with Mitrovic equalising from a corner. Set-pieces have been an issue for months now, with the side struggling against them even last season.
It’s an obvious area to address in training yet Leeds seem to continue to struggle against them. Mitrovic is also renowned for his aerial ability and should’ve been a priority to mark during the corner – there are no excuses for Ayling.
Leeds could hardly afford to concede a silly goal in such a crucial match, yet the team have once again thrown away a lead due to sloppy defending.
If Marsch is to keep his job at Elland Road, then he needs to scrub up on defending set-pieces, and quickly.
