Leeds United: Diego Llorente could be axed after disaster, Liam Cooper knocking down door to start v Villa

Leeds United skipper Liam Cooper will be knocking on the door of Jesse Marsch to start against Aston Villa on Sunday, according to Graham Smyth.

The Yorkshire Evening Post journalist admitted that the place of Diego Llorente is under threat after his disaster of a showing against Brentford before this break.

Llorente has also left Marsch visibly frustrated with some of his decision-making throughout the Premier League season already, and could now drop out.

Writing in his latest column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Smyth shared the latest potential team news ahead of the Elland Road showdown.

“At centre-half, Diego Llorente’s place in the team looks under threat after a ball-playing and decision-making performance at Brighton that visibly irked his manager, and that disastrous outing at Brentford,” he wrote.

“Club captain Liam Cooper came through 90 minutes against Southampton Under 21s and, at long last, will be knocking on Marsch’s door and looking for Premier League action.”

If there has been one thing missing from this season, it has been a real leader.

With Cooper, Luke Ayling and Stuart Dallas all missing from action, those who would usually take the captain’s armband have been sitting and watching.

Despite that, it has still been somewhat of a positive start with the Whites in mid-table, and picking up notable wins, like the one over Chelsea.

This one-month break from action is not ideal, but it has given Marsch the chance to evaluate his squad once again with everyone available apart from Dallas, and possibly Rodrigo.

Llorente has been away with Spain during the international break but didn’t make a contribution, so he could be looking over his shoulder in terms of his spot at Elland Road this weekend.

Cooper will be itching to go in what would be his first start of the 2022-23 season, and it would make perfect sense for it to happen against Aston Villa.

In other Leeds United news, the club should avoid a £31.5m deal for this PL winger after reports linked him with Elland Road
