Leeds United defender Junior Firpo expected out for couple of weeks

Leeds United will be without the services of Junior Firpo for a couple of weeks, according to The Athletic’s Phil Hay.

He was ruled out of the Saturday defeat against Southampton with a muscular problem and is not likely to be available for two weeks.

Kalvin Phillips also missed the game, but was left out as Marcelo Bielsa did not want to take a risk in order to avoid aggravating his calf/hip injury.

Hay wrote, “Firpo has a muscular problem. Expected to be out for a couple of weeks. Phillips (calf) has also had a hip injury recently and Bielsa didn’t feel he was ready to play.”

Need both back soon

Phillips’ absence was felt to a great extent in Saturday’s defeat against Southampton.

There was nobody who could control the tempo quite like the England international does and the midfield looked all over the place without him.

The likes of Mateusz Klich and Stuart Dallas are good enough, but they’re not quite at Phillips’ level.

Even at left-back, not have Firpo is a major blow. Despite being a new signing, Bielsa sees him as someone he would want to start week in and week out.

The Spaniard has been a bit suspect defensively, but offensively, he offers a different dimension.

Without his direct running up and down the left flank, Leeds are going to have problems, just like they did against Southampton.
