Leeds United could drop Joe Gelhardt for Raphinha v Brighton
Marcelo Bielsa could drop striker Joe Gelhardt for the Leeds United v Brighton fixture this weekend despite starting him against Tottenham Hotspur.
The Argentine did not have Patrick Bamford or Rodrigo’s services to call upon so he went with the young Englishman to lead the line.
While he did not do a bad job, he’s not quite ready to be a regular for Leeds and would not be starting if everyone’s fit.
With Bamford still expected to be out with Rodrigo’s fitness uncertain at the moment, one player who also missed the game and could return is Raphinha.
The Brazilian did not even make the matchday squad for the Spurs clash, but it seems that he’s ready to start the Brighton game.
Via his personal Twitter account, The Athletic’s Phil Hay issued a Leeds fitness update.
He wrote, “Raphinha is illness so that will be as and when but you’d hope okay for Brighton.
“Haven’t been given a timescale on Rodrigo. Ayling’s getting there though.”
With Dan James and Jack Harrison putting in their best performances of the season and even combining for the opening goal against Spurs, Bielsa is unlikely to drop them.
This leaves place for only Gelhardt, who has been labelled “exciting” by Jamie Redknapp in the aftermath of the game on Sky Sports, to make way for Raphinha.
It’s almost impossible that the Brazilian is left out when fit and Bielsa has started a James-Harrison-Raphinha fluid front trio and could do the same again.
