Leeds United: BBC Sport pundit stunned by ‘unbelievable’ moment he saw v Plymouth in FA Cup

Matthew Upson was left stunned live on air after Plymouth’s “unbelievable” equaliser against Leeds United in their FA Cup fourth-round replay on Tuesday (6 February).

The two sides met again, this time at Home Park after The Pilgrims forced a replay with a 1-1 draw at Elland Road (27 January) after a second-half equaliser from Adam Randell.

And after another 90 minutes at Home Park, it was the same scoreline with Brendon Gallaway cancelling out Wilfried Gnonto’s 66-minute opener after a free-kick was sent into the box and was knocked back across the face of goal by Ashley Phillips before the ball inadvertently diverted into the back of the net off Galloway’s chest.

And Upson, speaking on BBC Sports live coverage of the game (6 February, 9:20 pm) could not believe his eyes at what he saw. He said: “Unbelievable.

“We thought the conditions failed of this FA Cup tie this evening, but I think you’ve just seen that for such a difficult, swirly, swirly ball.

“So much light on this delivery. So really good touchback across the goal from Phillips.

“Not easy to control this ball just to get that great touch back across the goal. It’s just a simple task of getting a body part on it.”

Poor defending again from Leeds United

Such is the magic of the FA Cup, we saw Leeds United give away such brilliant control yet again against Plymouth.

Just like the initial tie at Elland Road, Daniel Farke’s men were in complete control, having all the possession and the chances to book their place in the fifth round but were punished for a lack of ruthlessness.

The Whites had a host of chances, including hitting the crossbar twice whilst also hitting the post late in the second-half which meant they should have sown up the game before Plymouth’s equaliser.

But Plymouth did exceptionally well to claw themselves back again and made the most of the difficult conditions through a well-worked set-piece with Phillips and Galloway taking advantage of some poor Leeds United defending.

Farke will be absolutely livid at how his team gave it away which made for a nervy ending at Home Park.

In other Leeds United news, Phil Hay shared whether Farke was about to cancel another loan deal early.
