Graham Smyth predicts Leeds United XI v Southampton, moots midfield change
Graham Smyth has raised the prospect of Daniel Farke potentially using Archie Gray in central midfield when Leeds United face Southampton.
Gray was used there in the first leg of the semi-final win over Norwich City before being reverted back to right-back for the second leg.
While the youngster is capable of playing in either position, Yorkshire Evening Post writer Smyth ultimately expects him to play in defence.
“I don’t think he’ll make any changes from [the second leg],” Smyth said on Sky Sports News [16 May, 11:10am].
“I’m not sure there are any changes you’d naturally make. You look at midfield and whether Gray plays there, but I see him playing right-back.”
Daniel Farke should stick with same Leeds United XI
Injuries dependent – and it looks as though Leeds are okay on that front – Farke should go with the same side that started against Norwich last time out.
The second leg win was arguably the Whites’ best performance of the season, coming at pretty much the perfect time.
Gray was pretty poor in the first leg at Carrow Road, whereas he looked a lot stronger in the second leg – as did everyone around him.
Sam Byram is seemingly ready to slot back in on the right side of defence if required, but surely Farke will not see the need to do that.
There is also a debate to be had as to whether Daniel James could start, with his pace always a handy tool, but again it does not seem likely.
Farke has showed he is not afraid to make big calls, but there is absolutely no reason to overthink the team selection for this huge match.
