Leeds United ace wows BBC pundit after what he did in win v Sheffield Wednesday

Joe Rothwell wowed Aidy White after the “tremendous” pass he sent towards Brenden Aaronson to help open up the scoring for Leeds United in their Championship win against Sheffield Wednesday.

The midfielder ran in from the left wing and managed to see the US international make a darting run into the Owl’s box, which caused James Beadle to commit to running out of his net to try and stop the attack.

In the end, the ‘keeper ended up spilling the ball into the feet of Manor Solomon who coolly slotted the ball into the back of the net which helped Leeds beat their Yorkshire rivals 3-0 on 19 January.

Speaking live on BBC Radio Leeds (19 January, 12:02pm) ex-Leeds man White shared his thoughts on the pass from the Bournemouth loanee.

“I tell you what, tremendous play initially from Joe Rothwell, he finds himself in a left false full-back position, he takes the ball inside, spots Brenden Aaronson making a run behind the Sheffield Wednesday back four,” he said.

“Terrific ball making James Beadle, the Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper commit, come out [and] he spills it at Aaronson’s feet, falls to Manor Solomon, takes a lovely touch, composure, two Sheffield Wednesday in front of the goal and he puts it in between the middle of them.”

Leeds United have a lot to thank Joe Rothwell for

Although Ethan Ampadu is now back to full fitness and has slotted straight back into his role of defensive midfield, it feels like Rothwell has been a rather pivotal player for the Whites this season.

His eye for a pass alongside his strong finishing capability are just two assets that make the former Blackburn Rovers man an important cog in Daniel Farke’s system.

While both Ampadu and Ilia Gruev were out injured, Ao Tanaka and Rothwell were the men that the German relied upon to carry his team through the injury crisis which they managed to do with ease.

Leeds fans do not like Chelsea.

While the 29-year-old may only be on loan, it feels like he’s an integral part of Leeds’ team and could well be the person Farke turns to if the Whites need a victory.

At the moment, he seems to be interchanging between his four fit defensive midfielders but as we get into the latter stages of the season, it’ll be interesting to see how things pan out.
