Leeds United: 4/10 Patrick Bamford stinks, 9/10 Georginio Rutter amazing – Player ratings v Millwall
Leeds United leapfrogged Leicester into first place in the Championship thanks to a 2-0 victory against Millwall at Elland Road thanks to goals from Wilfried Gnonto and Daniel James.
The focus of the first half was largely on a combative battle with the visitors opting to attempt to knock Leeds off their stride, but a great strike from Gnonto saw them go into half-time with a 1-0 lead.
In the second half, Millwall provided more of a threat, but a goal from James to make it 2-0 sealed the victory for Leeds thanks to two assists from Georginio Rutter.
Leeds United player ratings v Millwall at Elland Road
MOT Leeds News rated each Leeds player out of 10 below…
Illan Meslier – 6
Had very little to do as Millwall sat back and attempted to contain Leeds, other than an unfortunate moment involving a miscommunication with his defence which almost saw the visitors draw level. A solid enough performance, but looked shakey at times.
Archie Gray – 8
Was competitive and up for the fight throughout, not afraid to commit to challenges and use his physicality to counter Millwall’s rough style. Yet another impressively mature display from the 17-year-old who has received such high praise this season.
Joe Rodon – 7
A miscommunication with his goalkeeper almost saw Leeds pinned back shortly before half-time but he used his experience and know-how which has been so vital for Daniel Farke’s side to deal with the situation.
Other than that, there were no real moments of note in what was a comfortable display for the Welshman.
Ethan Ampadu – 7
A routine display from the defender alongside his usual partner, with the pair again proving their worth to Farke and this team with their assuredness and confidence in possession a huge part of Leeds’ play.
Junior Firpo – 4
Firpo was error-prone and clumsy in his challenges and picked up another yellow card on his record – albeit a seemingly harsh one at the time. By no means was it an awful performance from the left-back, but he’s certainly shown he can be better.
Ilia Gruev – 7
Wasn’t afraid to get amongst the midfield battle as he showed with four tackles, two interceptions and a 100 per cent aerial duel success rate, as he coped well with Millwall’s physicality. [Sofascore]
Glen Kamara – 6
Much like his midfield partner, Kamara proved willing to battle in midfield, but his usual assuredness in possession allowed him to stand out and keep play ticking over for Leeds.
Crycensio Summerville – 8
Millwall’s physical play and heavy challenges played straight into the winger’s hands. His quick feet, tricks and skills allowed him to dance around the visitors’ attempts to bring him down.
Picked up a knock which saw him dragged off after 74 minutes, but with five key passes, five shots and four fouls drawn, it was another exciting display from Summerville. [Sofascore]

Georginio Rutter – 9
It was his all-round display that caught the eye as the Frenchman tormented the Lions’ defence throughout the game as they simply couldn’t deal with him – as displayed by the fact he drew five fouls and two assists to help his team to victory. [Sofascore]
Wilfried Gnonto – 7
Scored an absolutely stunning goal with his weaker foot as he drove into space and fired an unstoppable strike to put Leeds in front, and provided a constant threat with his pace in behind.
Other than the goal, however, he was not as involved as he would have liked to have been and was taken off after 69 minutes.
Patrick Bamford – 4
His move to cover across the defender which allowed Gnonto the space ahead of the opening goal was expert-level, and showed just what Bamford has offered to this team even when not scoring or assisting with his movement and intelligence.
However, it was a disappointing performance as far as his attacking impact was concerned, failing to provide much of a threat going forward at all.
