Live from Elland Road: Leeds U23s rated after 1-1 draw v Burnley as Cooper picks up knock

Leeds Under-23s drew 1-1 with Burnley in PDL North action at Elland Road on Monday night and we were there to watch it…

Carlos Corberan put out a strong Leeds Under-23 side on Monday night, with Liam Cooper, Jamie Shackleton and Jack Clarke all starting and Tyler Roberts on the bench.

Leeds went in at half-time one goal up, with Ryan Edmondson heading the home side into the lead. Leeds dominated possession but struggled to create many chances with Burnley sitting deep.

Meanwhile, the visitors only threatened after mistakes from Leeds but grew into the game in the second half. Josh Benson scored from the penalty spot to level the game after a clumsy tackle from Pascal Struijk.

MOT Ratings

Illan Meslier – 7
Good distribution from the French keeper, not much to do in the first half and made a cracking save at the start of the second.

Oliver Casey – 9 (Man of the match)
The 19-year-old won all his battles and was calm in possession – he was the standout Leeds player on the night.

Pascal Struijk – 5
A defender who is being earmarked for the first-team but he had a bad night last night. Lost possession and was punished by Burnley but saved by the offside flag. He frequently found himself on the wrong side of his man and gave away the penalty that meant his side dropped two points.

Liam Cooper – 6 (subbed at half-time)
He was rusty at the start of the game but led the team well and was his usual calm self in possession. He was visibly limping before half-time but seemed to be okay when he was taken off by Bielsa in a pre-planned substitution. Hopefully, it was just a small knock.

Jamie Shackleton – 7 (subbed at half-time)
He got forward well and kept Josh Benson (the standout Burnley player) quiet.

Alfie McCalmont – 7
He grew into the game as it went on but lacked support in the heart of the midfield. He’s a similar player to Phillips but a bit less physical and this showed at times last night.

Liam McCarron – 7
The 18-year-old beat men with ease and linked up brilliantly with Jack Clarke. He put in a lovely floated assist for Edmondson but was much better in the first-half when he was playing deeper.

Mateusz Bogusz – 6
Made some good early touches but guilty of not tracking back and leaving McCalmont isolated in midfield. Had a very quiet second half.

Jordan Stevens – 4
Drifted through the game with no real impact early on and this continued throughout the game. Very poor.

Jack Clarke – 7 (subbed at half-time)
This was more like it from Clarke who looked back to his usual self at Elland Road. He squared up to the opposition and beat his players. Looked dangerous.

Ryan Edmondson – 7
Scored his goal with a powerful header and always found pockets of space in the box. He held the ball up well for supporting runners but eventually lost out to limited service. He also missed a big chance to win the game right at the end.

Tyler Roberts – 6
He tried to walk the ball into the goal a few times and could have been quicker, but showed glimpses of the skill we know he’s got.

Robbie Gotts – 5
We lost attacking impetus when he replaced Shackleton. Gotts made little impact either in defence or going forward.

Leif Davis – 5
Too slow to get back at times at left-back and was beaten for pace on numerous occasions.
