Leeds PL promotion bid gets major boost as definitive answer given in behind-the-scenes report
The Premier League is returning on June 17, this much we know, and that’s great news for Leeds United.
If the season finishes, three teams will be relegated and one of those spaces seems nailed on for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.
However, there is one big issue that wasn’t resolved in Thursday’s meeting – how the Premier League is going to be decided if the season can’t finish.
Unweighted points-per-game seems like the favourite option at the moment but some clubs are still trying get relegation taken off the table.
This represents the biggest threat to Leeds United’s promotion bid now. If relegation is taken off the table then clubs would have to vote 14/6 for an expanded 20/21 league if Leeds were to be granted promotion and we can’t see that happening.
The good news is that in the meeting on Monday Premier League chiefs gave a definitive answer to the rebel plotters.
In a behind-the-scenes reveal, the Daily Mail said the Premier League “insist” that however the season is decided, relegation must stay on the table.
This is dragging on.
The EFL has put back its crucial vote on the Championship until June 8 and the Premier League will decide the last remaining issue on promotion and relegation on Thursday.
However, it doesn’t look like there’s anything to worry about for Leeds.
The report claims that Premier League curtailment was discussed on Thursday but the meeting went on so long it wasn’t brought to a conclusion.
The issue will be decided in the Premier League meeting next Thursday but the Mail reports that clubs asking for it to be taken off the table were given “short shrift”.
No relegation seems like an option only favoured by certain clubs at the bottom, and they’re up against the bulk of Premier League sides, the Premier League itself and the FA.
The report claims both the Premier League and the FA “insist” that relegation must happen and that’s about as definitive an answer as we’ve heard so far.
The only outstanding issue is the mechanics to use in the event of curtailment.
It’s all positive for Leeds but it would still be good to get it officially ratified.
