Kris Boyd tears into 'overhyped' Leeds, compares Marcelo Bielsa to Chris Wilder

Kris Boyd launched into a tirade against Leeds United and Marcelo Bielsa before the Whites clashed Manchester City on Saturday.

Speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday [12:00, 10/04/21] via Football Daily on Twitter ex-Scotland striker Boyd took umbrage with the praise Bielsa and Leeds have received this season, despite sitting comfortably in mid-table and playing an attractive brand of football on their return to the top-flight.

Boyd even brought recently-sacked Chris Wilder into the conversation, making Bielsa comparisons to the ex-Sheffield United manager who left the Blades bottom of the Premier League.

“I might upset a few,” he said.

“I think there is a lot of overhype as well when you take into consideration what Leeds are spending, there’s a lot of people having their best season ever.

“All we hear is Marcelo Bielsa’s this master tactician but Chris Wilder did the exact same last season.

“When you take into consideration what Leeds are spending I think they could even be doing better.

“They spent nearly £100million in the summer coming up.”

Evergreen broadcaster and host of Soccer Saturday Jeff Stelling came out to bat for Leeds: “What do you expect, them to not spend any money and go straight back down again?”, he said.

“They’ve been brilliant at times.”

Trash talk

Okay we’ll bite, Boyd.

It’s not the first time we’ve seen pundits try to toe the controversial line and disrupt this Bielsa narrative that they have such an issue with.

El Loco is one of the most popular figures in football who has attracted widespread acclaim, with Pep Guardiola particularly effusive in his praise over the years.

Bielsa has transformed the Whites from Championship also-rans to a mid-table Premier League team, in the space of less than three years.

He has done so playing an attractive brand of football that has resonated with so many, and that is why his popularity continues to soar.

Of course he has spent a fair bob in the summer but aside from Rodrigo [£27million – Transfermarkt] no one cost upwards of £20million.

Young stars Illan Meslier and Pascal Struijk have been coached to an exceptional standard proving it’s not about money for Bielsa, he can do wonders with unpolished gems.

Wilder did a good job at our Yorkshire rivals before they imploded this season but there’s no comparison between him and a managerial icon who has coached at World Cups.
