Kris Boyd shares what Ipswich fans did when Leeds United first-half news filtered into Portman Rd

Kris Boyd shared that Ipswich Town fans “erupted” when news that Leeds United had gone behind against Southampton filtered into Portman Road.

Leeds went 1-0 down in the 18th minute as Adam Armstrong gave the Saints the lead at Elland Road, news of which quickly made its way to the Ipswich fans.

Leeds failing to claim victory over Southampton guaranteed promotion for Ipswich, leading to jubilation from the Tractor Boys’ supporters upon hearing of the Whites conceding.

Boyd, speaking on Sky Sports Soccer Saturday (4 May), said: “The stadium erupted when the news from Leeds filtered through! The fans are in dreamland and they feel they are going up.”

Leeds United enter the lottery of the playoffs

Ipswich’s 2-0 win over Huddersfield Town at home rendered Leeds’ result immaterial, but the Whites would have been unable to take advantage even if the Tractor Boys had slipped up.

A 2-1 defeat at Elland Road on the final day of the regular season was not the result Daniel Farke would have wanted heading into the playoffs, where they will face Norwich City in the semi-finals.

Leeds actually cancelled out the goal that was so boisterously celebrated by Ipswich fans fairly quickly, with Joel Piroe equalising just three minutes after Armstrong’s opener.

However, Will Smallbone struck in the 35th minute, scoring what would prove to be the game’s decisive goal, with Leeds unable to muster a fightback.

And the Whites’ defeat was deserved. Southampton generated a higher xG (1.08 to 0.85) and xGOT – expected goals on target – (1.35 to 0.37) than Farke’s men, evidence of their superiority in front of goal [FotMob].

Leeds will hope to muster some belief before the playoffs and produce stronger performances than they have recently as they look to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking.
