Junior Firpo called out over remark live on Sky after Leeds draw v West Brom
Leeds United star Junior Firpo has been the subject of controversy after a remark he made in the aftermath of the 1-1 draw with West Brom.
The 28-year-old scored the opener in the Elland Road clash on Saturday (1 March) as the Whites were held by the playoff contenders.
Daniel Farke’s side could find their margin at the top of the Championship reduced to three points if Sheffield United win against Queen’s Park Rangers.
And comments made by Firpo soon after the match clearly did not go down too well with the West Brom contingent.

Firpo comments cause controversy after Leeds v West Brom draw
After the game, Firpo was speaking to Sky Sports and told the broadcaster that “only one team was trying to get the win”.
However, an ex-Baggies employee has taken exception to the comment as former Albion kitman Pat Frost reacted in a post on X.
He simply replied with the word “bantz”, meaning ‘banter’.
“There was just one team trying to get the win” 😮

Leeds lucky to secure draw against West Brom
While the Whites had the better of the possession with 53 per cent, the visitors arguably had the better chances in the contest.
Daniel Farke‘s side did create 1.02 expected goals compared to the Baggies’ figure of just 0.77, but they also allowed three shots on target and only had two themselves despite a huge push for a winner.
John Swift missed a glorious chance to give Albion the lead before Firpo notched the opener and that could have completely changed the clash if he had done better.
Given the Peacocks’ impressive home record, it was a surprise that they did not go on to secure victory, but Farke cannot let his side dwell on the dropped points.
Stats | xG | Shots on target | Big chances missed |
Leeds United | 1.02 | 2 | 0 |
West Brom | 0.77 | 3 | 2 |
The German has to pick his squad up and get them ready to go again against Portsmouth on 9 March as they try to secure a Premier League berth for next season.
Leeds need to focus on their own results and performances and not let outside noise and other teams get into their heads as the campaign comes to a close.
If they can keep their composure and end the season strongly, they should have enough of a buffer on the Blades and Burnley to secure promotion.
Firpo’s comments are silly, obviously, as Mowbray’s side were always going to defend strongly as their playoff hopes depend on positive results. The hosts just did not do enough to win on this occasion.
