Junior Firpo axed to Leeds United Under-21s for Papa John's Trophy showdown

Junior Firpo has been axed to the Leeds United Under-21s squad for Tuesday night’s clash against Crewe Alexandra in the Papa John’s Trophy.

As confirmed by Leeds’ official Twitter account ahead off kick-off at the Mornflake Stadium on 1 November, the 26-year-old left-back will start against the League Two club after two matches of being an unused substitute in the senior side.

Mateusz Klich has also dropped into the Under-21s side after failing to make an appearance in a Premier League game for the first time this season against Liverpool at the weekend.

Cody Drameh, Leo Hjelde, Darko Gyabi, Wilfried Gnonto and Joe Gelhardt are also starting against Crewe.

Time to shine

While Klich is at the back-end of his career as a Leeds player and doesn’t have much to do in this game other than get some minutes under his belt, Firpo will be playing to try and save his future at Elland Road.

Since his arrival from Barcelona last year, the Dominican Republic left-back has been a massive disappointment.

If he’s not playing badly, he’s injured or suspended.

And now, he’s not playing at all for Leeds’ senior side because Pascal Struijk has been a huge improvement on him this season even though the Dutchman isn’t even a natural left-back.

Once Stuart Dallas is back to action – hopefully in the New Year – that should push Firpo even further down the pecking order at left-back.

He desperately needs to get back up to speed after missing so much action due to injury.

But we doubt he’ll ever be anywhere near good enough.

In other Leeds United news, a major new sack development has emerged despite Jesse Marsch’s win over Liverpool.
