Journalist shares whether Leeds United star Patrick Bamford will be in England squad today

Mirror journalist John Cross suggests Leeds United forward Patrick Bamford will not make the England squad for the upcoming international break.

Bamford, 28, has spent most of the season injury but returned to Leeds’ starting line-up on Sunday as they beat Norwich 2-1 at Elland Road.

However, Cross has written in the print edition of the Mirror on 17 March [page 63] that Bamford’s injury issues this term are likely to keep him out of Gareth Southgate’s next England squad, which will be announced on Thursday.

Roma striker Tammy Abraham seems to be in the running to make England’s squad for friendly clashes against Switzerland and Ivory Coast.

No surprise

We cannot say we’re shocked to read that Bamford won’t be in the upcoming England squad.

And while we’re always proud to see Leeds players representing the Three Lions, we’re glad he isn’t on this occasion.

This international break is absolutely pointless and one that simply isn’t needed for England players.

While other countries will fight it out for the remaining spots at the World Cup later this year, England will be playing two pointless friendly matches against teams who we should be expected to beat easily.

Leeds United

Some of England’s players could suffer injuries in those games so we’re glad that Bamford is set to miss out and suffer a potential relapse of his injury issues this season.

Even if the striker was fully fit, this would be good news. Let the other players risk injury in pointless friendlies instead of ours.

Leeds have had so many issues this season but it’s nice to know that by the time this international break is over, Jesse Marsch might actually have a fully fit squad to choose from.

In other Leeds United news, a player has been spotted back in training at Thorp Arch in a major boost for the Whites.
