Joel Piroe ‘devastated’ by what happened to him in Leeds v Millwall

Joel Piroe may have left Elland Road feeling distraught on Wednesday despite Leeds United managing to beat Millwall 2-0.

The Whites regained their place at the top of the Championship table with Jake Cooper’s own goal and Ao Tanaka’s second-half strike enough to set the two teams apart.

Daniel Farke’s men were on top for most of the clash with Piroe often getting himself into some promising positions.

However, there was one moment from the game that the Dutchman may have been left rather unimpressed with.

Piroe left upset after offside call rules goal out for Leeds

Piroe may have been left rather unhappy with referee Dean Whitestone on 12 March after he chalked off his goal for being offside.

The Dutchman was the man chosen to lead Leeds’ attacking line against the Lions with the striker looking to get back on level terms with Borja Sainz in the Championship top scorer race.

The top three Championship scorers so far this season.

His constant pressing alongside his ability to hold up play allowed the Whites to stay on top throughout the clash and enabled them to add another three points to their Championship tally.

The moment in question was started by Piroe who sent a short ball towards the feet of Brenden Aaronson who then played an impeccable backheel ball back to the Dutchman.

Piroe then shrugged off Cooper and managed to hit a peach of a strike but he unfortunately strayed marginally offside.

Speaking live on BBC Radio Leeds in quotes relayed by the BBC Sport website (12 March), Adam Pope gave his thoughts on how Piroe was likely feeling after the goal was chalked off.

“Another reason why Joel Piroe might be devastated that his goal for Leeds United was given offside is because Borja Sainz scored for Norwich last night,” he said.

“Piroe is no longer joint-top scorer in the Championship in the race for the golden boot.”

Leeds are one step closer to Premier League promotion

There’s no denying that Leeds’ main goal this season has been to earn promotion to the Premier League.

While things may have got a bit nervy over the last couple of weeks, Farke seems to have got his men back on track.

Granted, the Whites are only just coming off the back of a 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth but if they can play like they did against Millwall for the rest of the season, they should easily be able to book their place in the top two.

Leeds have been one of the most dominant teams in the second tier this term and if they somehow miss out on promotion, it’ll be nothing short of a disaster.
