Joel Piroe caught up in strange moment in Leeds v Luton, Sky pundit aghast
Courtney Sweetman-Kirk was left dumbfounded as Joel Piroe was deemed to have fouled Mark McGuinness for Leeds United in the clash against Luton Town.
The Whites headed into the half-time break 2-0 up at Elland Road on Wednesday (27 November) thanks to goals from Sam Byram and Joel Piroe.
Prior to his goal, Piroe was involved in a baffling incident which left Sweetman-Kirk stunned live on Sky Sports [27 November] for a soft foul on McGuinness.
Both players were involved in a tangle, which saw the Luton defender awarded a free-kick.
She said: “This is a strange one from the referee. It’s six of one, half a dozen of the other, to be honest. McGuinness was already on his way down so that’s harsh on Piroe.”
Joel Piroe finds his goalscoring form for Leeds United v Luton Town
Piroe is edging ahead of strike partner Mateo Joseph for the privilege of leading the line for the Whites, and has done himself the world of good adding to his tally against Luton.
The centre-forward debacle has become a cause for concern in West Yorkshire; despite Leeds spreading the goalscoring burden across the pitch, a regular goalscorer would all but secure Premier League promotion.
Dan James has been a regular contributor in that regard but finds himself in the dugout at Elland Road, with one less regular goal threat on the pitch; Piroe has proven to Farke that he can carry the burden on his shoulders.
Although Farke is preparing to bolster the forward line in the upcoming January transfer window with Manchester City youngster James McAtee the desired target, there is still plenty of Championship football to be played until then, and neither Piroe nor Joseph are pulling their weight on a consistent enough basis.

The consequences of a third successive campaign in the second tier are well known to all at Leeds; anyone deemed to be holding the side back this season will undoubtedly be let go at the first opportunity, regardless of how the season plays out.
However, there are still 45 minutes for Piroe to further raise his stock and to secure another monumental three points for the Whites – he can cement himself as the undisputed number-one option in West Yorkshire.
