Joe Rothwell torn into for ‘dreadful’ moment in Leeds United clash v Sheffield United

Andy Hinchliffe has torn into Joe Rothwell for a “dreadful” moment in the first half of the clash between Leeds United and Sheffield United.

Daniel Farke’s side headed into the break at Elland Road level at 0-0 with Chris Wilder’s Blades on Friday (18 October) as both sides look to climb to the top of the Championship table.

While both teams struggled to fashion out any clear-cut chances in the opening 45 minutes, Sky Sports pundit Hincliffe was quick to slam Rothwell for his poor free-kick which wasted an excellent scoring opportunity.

Speaking on Sky Sports Main Event (18 October, 20:21) he said: “It’s such a poor ball in though from Joe Rothwell.

“Piroe does what he can to just try and help it on, but you’ve just got to play that ball into that corridor. He’s good enough Rothwell to whip that ball into that space between the backline and the goalkeeper and just let his teammates attack it.

“It was a dreadful delivery.”

What happened to Joe Rothwell in Leeds United’s clash with Sheffield United at Elland Road?

Rothwell was signed to add that extra dimension to the Leeds United midfield and while the loanee has impressed in his limited minutes so far this season, he hasn’t quite managed to have the impact going forward most expected.

His cross midway through the first half at Elland Road was so disappointing as it was one of the few great chances the Whites produced in the opening 45 minutes and it was spurned because of his poor delivery.

The midfielder more than made up for it with a few other excellent passes later on in the half, but he will know that he should have done better in that moment. Hopefully, he will brush off the cobwebs from the international break in the second half.

With both Ilia Gruev and Ethan Ampadu ruled out until the new year at least, Leeds fans are going to have to get used to seeing a lot of Rothwell and Ao Tanaka in the coming weeks and months as they are clearly Farke’s preferred pairing.
