Joe Rothwell ‘anguished’ after Leeds United moment v Harrogate Town

Joe Rothwell appeared “anguished” after missing an excellent opportunity as Leeds United limped past Harrogate Town in the FA Cup on Saturday.

The Whites struggled to break down their neighbours at Elland Road on 11 January, with Largie Ramazani eventually scoring the only goal in a 1-0 win.

Willy Gnonto, who looked a bright spark throughout, won a free kick with Rothwell wildly overhitting it, and Jonathan Pearce spotted his angry reaction after on BBC Sport [11 January].

Stephen Warnock immediately reacted, saying: “The final ball hasn’t been good enough. Poor from Joe Rothwell, he’s better than that. He has more quality than that.”

Leeds United set piece woes continue against Harrogate

While goalscoring hasn’t been a major concern at Elland Road this season, a lack of threat from set pieces has and Rothwell’s attempted delivery summed up those failures.

Rothwell will know he should be doing better in those situations given the level of quality he possesses.

In the Championship this season, Leeds have scored the fewest goals from set pieces having notched just four times [WhoScored] and if the Whites can address that, their chances of winning closely contested encounters go up tenfold.

Especially against sides that tend to sit in deep, the ability to pose a threat from set pieces can often be the difference between three points or one and a lack of composure in those situations has proven detrimental in several encounters.

A failure to improve in that regard will severely limit their ability to get results, especially against sides likely to succumb to Leeds’ possession.
