Jermaine Beckford compares Leeds United star Georginio Rutter to Bergkamp after what he did

Jermaine Beckford jokingly compared Georginio Rutter to Arsenal legend Dennis Bergkamp after his assist in Leeds United’s 2-0 win over Plymouth on Saturday.

The Whites claimed a 2-0 win at Home Park to move back into second place, with the French attacker picking up an assist for the goal with a long-range pass to Willy Gnonto to get his 5th goal in five games.

And speaking during half-time live on Sky Sports (17 February, 13:24), ex-Leeds striker Beckford admitted he was “absolutely buzzing” for Gnonto while comparing Rutter’s pas to something the Gunners legend would have pulled off in his prime.

“Is it a thing of beauty in your eyes?” he was asked by presenter David Prutton, before Beckford said, “It was Bergkamp-esque!”

“The surprising thing for me in this instance is that neither one of the teams have that much control of the possession. Georginio Rutter, he has a quick glance up and spots Willy Gnonto on the other side of the pitch. And he notices that he’s in a fair bit of space.

“It’s a bit of a hoof, lets be honest, but Gnonto, great first touch. He has meant it. We’ve had a couple of discussions in the studio about if he’s meant to bring the ball down around Gibson. Whether he does, whether he doesn’t it’s a great first touch.

“Manages to bring the ball down and it’s a lovely finish as well. Right into the bottom corner with his weaker left foot. This is continuing a great run of form that Willy Gnonto is finding himself in. That’s five goals in five games all comps, and I’m absolutely buzzing for the kid.”

Georginio Rutter has the X-Factor for Leeds United

When you consider the situation that Rutter found himself in at Elland Road after joining the club, you’d have been hard pressed to find a fan who saw this in his future.

The young forward was isolated from the squad last season almost immediately after joining with Sam Allardyce and Javi Gracia all but refusing to use him, but Daniel Farke has made him a key player in this side.

His movement, skill, pace and quality on the ball have made him indispensable and his ability to win games on his own with moments of magic make him stand out more.

Whether he meant the pass to go the way it did is a question on its own, but there’s no doubting that he is capable of that type of skill regularly and it’s a large reason why the club are doing so well.

Arsenal fans won’t appreciate the compliment, and even if it was made in a joking way, there is a bit of truth to it. Leeds fans have their own version of the Dutch maestro.
