Jeff Stelling mocks Paul Merson live on Sky as new footage emerges of Leeds United incident v Arsenal

Jeff Stelling mocked Paul Merson for getting his tongue in a twist when reporting on Arsenal’s penalty against Leeds United at the Emirates on Saturday.

Gabriel Jesus put the Gunners 1-0 ahead from the penalty spot in their 4-1 win over the Whites on 1 April after Luke Ayling clumsily brought the Brazilian down with a strange foul.

Ayling didn’t bother to appeal against the referee’s decision to give Arsenal a spot-kick because he knew what he’d done but Merson struggled to get his words out when reacting to the incident.

Speaking on Sky Sports News on 1 April (3:31pm), Merson said: “It must be a penalty because Ayling’s not said a word. He put his hand in his… hands in his… head in his hands – that’s the right one – and it looks like it’s going to be a penalty. I’m not sure about it.”

Stelling said: “There might be a better angle here.”

Merson then agreed it was a penalty, saying: “Oh, he catches his knee. Penalty. He gets him second time. Ayling knows – he just shakes his head – and this is right against the run of play.”

Stelling then mocked Merson for his muddled reporting on the incident, saying: “Head in hands, Merse. It’s a good job there aren’t a lot more body parts you could have mentioned for expressions.”

Merson laughed and said: “I seriously had to think.”

Ridiculous

What was Ayling playing at?

He really doesn’t impress when he plays at the Emirates, does he?

Ayling went down and then for some reason stuck his foot up and made contact with Jesus’ knee.

The ex-Manchester City striker was always going to hit the deck if he felt a bit of contact inside the penalty area so even if he did make the most of it, it was still a penalty.

It was such a stupid one to give away because Leeds were the better team, looking very comfortable until a ridiculous rush of blood to the head – yet again – from one of the most experienced players in the squad.

Ayling has never been a Premier League-level defender and should have been upgraded upon a long time ago.

The reason why we’re in a relegation battle has been because of blind loyalty shown to players who just aren’t up to scratch for the Premier League.
