Jeff Stelling mocks Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch as Paul Merson slams player

Paul Merson slaughtered Leeds United right-back Luke Ayling for his red card against Arsenal while Jeff Stelling has mocked Jesse Marsch for using quotes by Mother Theresa.

Leeds have been in woeful form and have lost their heads in recent weeks with Ayling and Daniel James both missing the rest of the season due to mindless red cards against Arsenal and Chelsea respectively.

Marsch has revealed that he’s been quoting historical figures to the squad but Stelling doesn’t see how that leads to his players committing such awful fouls in games.

“I don’t think Mother Theresa ever said, ‘go out and scissor tackle him, my son’ – not to my knowledge anyway,” said Stelling on Sky Sports News on Sunday (15 May, 01:44pm).

“So what the heck was going through Luke Ayling’s mind and other players as well? They’re self-destructing, aren’t they?”

Merson replied: “You’ve got to keep calm when all this panic is going on.

“The Ayling one, I mean, where’s Martinelli going there?

“I can’t believe what he was doing and he thoroughly deserved to get red-carded.

“Look at that. That is an absolute joke.”

Still not over it

We still cannot believe Ayling’s red card.

Daniel James at least won the ball and tackling isn’t his strength, so you can make some excuses for what was, admittedly, a terrible challenge on Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic.

But Ayling was wearing the captain’s armband, is a senior player and the only available right-back among Marsch’s senior options.

It was completely idiotic and he deserves all the criticism he gets because if we do get relegated, Ayling’s stupid red card will have played a role in it.

Ayling’s contract is up next summer.

He’s a Championship-level player, in all honesty, so if we do go down then he might be worth sticking with but for the Premier League, he doesn’t offer enough.

Marcelo Bielsa did very well with what is essentially a Championship-level squad if you discount the likes of Kalvin Phillips and Raphinha.

Marsch had no chance of doing as well as Bielsa did with this bunch.

In other Leeds United news, Joe Gelhardt has been told to quit Elland Road after a shock report emerged by The Telegraph.
