Illan Meslier praised for ‘Huge’ save in Leeds United clash v Manchester United live on Sky Sports

Illan Meslier was praised for a “huge” save that kept Leeds in the game during the first half of their Premier League clash with Manchester United on Sunday.

The Whites were competitive throughout the first 45 minutes at Elland Road and had the best chances up until stoppage time, when an error from Max Wober allowed Bruno Fernandes to race in behind one on one.

But the Portuguese star saw his effort denied by young goalkeeper Meslier’s feet, and the highly-rated stopper was praised while Wober was described as “the most relieved man” in the ground.

“Huge save from the Leeds goalkeeper,” Rob Hawthorne said on commentary for Sky Sports (12 February, 14:46).

“Wober will be the most relieved man in this ground,” Alan Smith added.

“They’ve managed to avoid these kind of simple errors out there today. Could and should easily have been a goal down just before half-time.

“Good stop though, good stop from Meslier.”

Quality

There is a reason why Meslier is widely regarded as one of the biggest assets at Elland Road right now, and saves like this show why it is imperative that he is kept at the club for as long as possible.

Since becoming a first-team regular we have seen a steady progression where errors are being eradicated from his game and he is able to step up at the biggest and most vital moments in games.

Without him there is no doubt that we would be in a much worse position in the league table than we already are, which tells you everything you need to know.

It isn’t a surprise that the big clubs have begun to circle and be credited with interest for him, but the club are in a great position to ensure that he either sticks around or at the very least secures a huge fee should he leave.

He’s a top young goalkeeper and it will be incredibly difficult to replace whenever he does leave, so we should be fully focused on keeping him around.
