Illan Meslier apology shared on Sky Sports News after what pundit said in Leeds United win v Watford
Gareth Ainsworth issued an apology to Illan Meslier after mixing him up with Daniel Bachmann as Leeds United beat Watford 2-1 on Tuesday (22 October).
The Hornets shot-stopper was at the centre of attention at Elland Road after spilling Large Ramazani’s effort into his own goal before parrying a cross straight to Brenden Aaronson to help Leeds double their lead.
Despite Daniel Farke’s side racing into a two-goal lead, the former QPR and Wycombe Wanderers manager named Meslier as the man to make the mistakes instead.
Speaking live via Sky Sports News on Tuesday (22 October, 8:08pm), Ainsworth said: “I’ll have to give an apology to Illan Meslier, the Leeds keeper. I said it was him who made the mistake for the goals but it’s obviously Daniel Bachmann.
“I got my goalkeepers mixed up, so sorry Meslier! It was Bachmann with the errors.”
Illan Meslier mistake made in Leeds United v Watford
Meslier has certainly faced his fair share of criticism, most recently after an incredible blunder in the final moments of the 2-2 draw with Sunderland, but he cannot be blamed against Watford.
Defensive pair Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk looked to have blunders as Kwadwo Baah scored two minutes into the second half, however, handing a sliver of hope to the Hornets.
Meslier is likely to have some sympathy for his opposite number, though. Human error always will be a part of the sport, which often is what makes it so entertaining, but you cannot help but feel bad for him.

Leeds, on the other hand, will not care after taking a two-goal lead, which appears to be hugely important as Watford got a goal back very early in the second half.
Farke’s men now sit level on points with Sunderland atop the Championship table, at least until the Black Cats face Luton Town on Wednesday 23 October, who are favourites to take all three points.
In other Leeds United news, Daniel Farke replacement talks have been blasted as “nonsense” as recent reports emerge.
