Ian Wright shares Rodrigo injury verdict on Match of the Day after Leeds United defeat v Chelsea

Rodrigo’s return from injury could help sort out the goalscoring issues at Leeds United, according to Ian Wright.

Rodrigo, 31, has been out of action for over a month, missing all the games in February as well as Saturday’s 1-0 defeat away at Chelsea in the Premier League.

He’s Leeds’ top goalscorer this season with 12 goals in 22 appearances across all competitions but, as per injury expert Ben Dinnery, he’s not expected to be back until the start of April.

Leeds didn’t play badly at Stamford Bridge this weekend and Gary Lineker and Wright both believe it’s down to the Yorkshire club’s inability to score goals.

Speaking on Match of the Day on Saturday night (4 March, 1h14m15s), Lineker said: “As for Leeds, they played well, can’t score, same old.”

Wright agreed. He said: “Same old Leeds. I think maybe if Rodrigo comes back he can maybe nick some goals for them.”

Desperate

It was a tough game for Georginio Rutter to make his full Premier League debut in.

Even though Chelsea were without Tiago Silva, they did have Wes Fofana back from injury and the goalscoring centre-back was at his best at both ends of the pitch, unfortunately for Leeds.

Rutter is only 20 years old so it’s going to take him some time to not only get settled down at Elland Road but to also start putting in some solid performances.

He’d only scored two goals in 15 Bundesliga appearances with Hoffenheim this season, remember?

We’re a bit worried that he’s not actually a goalscorer, which could be an issue.

Rodrigo hasn’t been prolific in his time at Leeds and neither has Patrick Bamford – who was injury yet again for the trip to West London this weekend.

We’ve lost faith in Bamford due to his injuries and the fact that he’s only had one good season in front of goal for us.

Rodrigo has proven himself to be more than capable but we just have to see how he is once he’s back from this injury.
