Leeds United fans were delighted to see Joe Gelhardt back in action for the Under-23s this afternoon.

He started upfront in a delayed kick-off after a late pitch inspection finally saw the game given the go-ahead to start at 2pm.

Leeds didn’t waste any time, laying siege to the Sunderland goal and eventually going ahead from the spot.

Gelhardt won the penalty but Tyler Roberts pulled rank and demanded the ball. Thankfully, he scored, but as one fan pointed out, “He should try winning one himself first.”

Gelhardt hadn’t featured for the Under-23s since December, with reports claiming it wasn’t because of an injury or COVID-related.

That caused a bit of worry with some Leeds fans but Gelhardt looked as sharp as ever this afternoon.

One fan said “Gelhardt needs to get into our matchday squad, #he’s ready” while another said his “ball manipulation is something else”.

Josh Hobbs from stats site All Stats Aren’t We said, “Joe Gelhardt is just so good at making space for himself to get shots off.”

Gelhardt missed out on a possible Leeds debut when Sam Greenwood was used in the recent FA Cup defeat against Crawley.

Now he’s back, we predict he’s going to be focusing in on his first appearance on the first-team bench with laser precision.

Leeds won the game and moved 10 points clear at the top of the PL2 Division 2 table but suffered a worrying injury to Ian Poveda at the end.

One fan thinks this could mean Gelhardt being on the bench on Wednesday.

Here are the best reactions to his display for the Under-23s this afternoon…
