talkSPORT broadcaster Adrian Durham has praised Kalvin Phillips and said that the Leeds United midfielder should be in the England line-up for Euro 2020.
However, Durham added, “He won’t be picked, I know that”.
Durham was full of praise for Phillips in his return from suspension in the game against Brentford on Tuesday.
He said that the Leeds midfielder was “sensationally good” and that the Brentford fans near him were also saying he was “brilliant”.
Southgate has been spotted at Elland Road recently but Durham thinks that while he might be keeping an eye on Phillips, a call-up is not going to happen by the summer.
Durham was talking about the likely England line-up for the Euros next summer with guest Matt Holland on his Drive show (talkSPORT, Thursday, 6pm).
“Kalvin Phillips, I don’t think he’ll be picked,” said Durham. “He won’t be picked, I know that but this is the team I would pick.”
Matt Holland said, “I like him a lot. I’ve seen him a couple of times recently, in the FA Cup against Arsenal and again v Brentford.
“He’s a really good player. He always wants the ball. He’s really, really good, but you’re right, he won’t be picked.”
Euros too soon for Phillips
We’re sure that Phillips’ time will come. In the Premier League and for England.
However, the Euros next summer is going to be too soon unless something very dramatic happens.
Southgate has his team and he has his squad and he’s highly unlikely to bring in someone new at this stage.
We actually think that’s a loss to England. The holding midfield position is an issue for Southgate’s side and we genuinely don’t think there’s anyone better in the country at the moment than Phillips.
Playing in the Championship is the issue but that will be gone next season, one way or the other.
Hopefully, Phillips will be playing for Leeds in the Premier League and for England in the coming years.
