‘Hand a transfer request in; Disgraceful’: Many Leeds fans fume at comments from senior club man
Leeds United are second in the Championship and favourites to win the title.
However, you wouldn’t know it from some of the fans on Twitter at the moment.
A 1-0 defeat to Wigan, the third in the last four games, has stirred the pot and the atmosphere on social media is pretty toxic at the moment.
Leeds chief Angus Kinnear tried to calm things and get the fans onside again in an interview on Wednesday but it’s backfired judging by the comments he’s been getting on Twitter.
In an interview given to BBC journalist Adam Pope (Wednesday, BBC Radio Leeds, 6pm), Kinnear said that Leeds were on course for promotion, albeit a bit behind the two-points a game trajectory they’d mapped out.
Kinnear then appealed to the fans.
“I think it’s important supporters stay together with the team,” Kinnear said. “We’re going to have some dicey moments between now and the end of the season.
“What I do know is that when the fans and the team are united we’re formidable at home and away.
“When the nervousness creeps in, and it’s understandable, it transmits to the players and it affects their performance.
“What we need from the supporters, what they do fantastically since I’ve been here, is giving the side their incredible support.”
We can understand what Kinnear is saying. But it should be pretty clear that there’s a distinction between the supporters in the grounds and the fans on Twitter.
You could never accuse the Leeds fans of not getting behind their team during games but when you sit through a match like the one against Wigan, there are no supporters in the world who could keep it up for 90 minutes.
Kinnear would have been better advised to praise the live fans and request the social media warriors tone it down a bit.
One fan said, “If you don’t have the mentality to play for Leeds United then hand in a transfer request. These fans back the team home and away in their thousands, long before and after you were here.”
So, a bit of an own goal from Kinnear but the Leeds faithful will still be loud and proud on Saturday at the City Ground, despite taking some brutal digs at the CEO…
