'Get him out', 'World class' – Many Leeds fans split by performance of one player v West Brom

We said before the West Brom game that the Leeds defence was a concern and that keeping a clean sheet would be massive.

It didn’t take long for that to go, with West Brom scoring after just over a minute of the game thanks to some calamitous defending.

The ball was played into the box and Kiko Casilla punched it but got no distance. West Brom were then allowed two headers from close range before the ball was hooked into the net by Semi Ajayi.

You could throw a net and find a Leeds player to blame for the goal but it all started from a very unconvincing punch from Casilla, and after a strong start to the season he’s shown signs of nerves again recently.

He came in for a lot of stick from Leeds fans on Twitter, with one saying he should be dropped.

That might be enforced if he is found guilty of a charge of racist abuse that is due to be heard by the FA in the new year.

However, after that mistake, Casilla showed the real goalkeeper that everyone knows is in there.

He made two world-class saves, one late on, that won the point for Leeds as much as the goal.

And the fans turned, showering Casilla with praise.

The two sets of tweets encapsulate perfectly the life of a keeper. Make one mistake and you’re drowned in abuse. But dig in and you can turn it round.

Casilla was 99% brilliant today. And we’ll forgive him his error.

Here are the negative reactions from Leeds fans after Casilla’s latest mistake…

And here are a selection of the ones that Casilla will want to read when he gets home tonight.

Our verdict? Well, some of the reactions are obviously over the top and tweeted in anger, but Casilla does infuriate.

When he’s good he’s the best keeper in the Championship. When he’s bad he’s horrible.

However, the goal can’t entirely be put at his door. Ben White has to take some of the blame too for not reacting to the different phases.

After the goal? Casilla was world-class.
