We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that “fingers will be pointed” at Illan Meslier after the young keeper conceded seven goals in his first two Premier League games.
Leeds beat Fulham 4-3 on Saturday after losing to Liverpool to the same scoreline the week before.
However, Robinson said it’s vital that Marcelo Bielsa keeps the faith in him and gives him the confidence that he needs to play every week in the top-flight.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News, Robinson said, “He’ll be disappointed with a couple of the goals. I thought he did okay at Anfield the week before.
“It’s a difficult one because he’s conceded seven goals in two games now for Leeds and fingers will be pointed. It’s been a poor start for Leeds defensively.
“He’s the number one and the manager is very loyal. You’ve seen the likes of Kepa at Chelsea – his position is under threat. David de Gea has been criticised at Man United.
“If you’re the number one you want to feel that you’re the number one. You don’t want to feel that you don’t have the support of your manager or your teammates.
“That’s why it’s so important for Bielsa to stick with Meslier now. He’s only a young lad. He needs the confidence to play week in, week out.
“I can’t see Casilla coming back in and I can’t really see the result being any different if anyone else had been in goal for Leeds.”
Leeds had the best defence in the Championship last season but a new centre-back pairing of Robin Koch and Liam Cooper will take time to bed in.
You can’t even blame it on the move up in quality as Leeds beat Fulham 3-0 in the Championship after lockdown.
One thing is certain, though, Marcelo Bielsa will be looking for an improvement in the next game, away at Sheffield United on Sunday.
