Exclusive: Paul Robinson reveals Leeds 20y/o has ‘huge opportunity’ after major club development
We’re delighted to welcome former England goalkeeper Paul Robinson as our exclusive columnist. Each week he’ll be giving his views on the biggest talking points at Leeds United…
Paul Robinson has said that 20-year-old goalkeeper Illan Meslier has a “huge opportunity” to make the gloves his own at Leeds United.
Meslier made his league debut for Leeds in the 4-0 win against Hull last Saturday and had a solid, if slightly nervy, game.
Kiko Casilla has been banned for eight games and that gives Meslier a clear run for the majority of the rest of the season.
What’s more the FA published their written reasons for the verdict and it doesn’t read well for Casilla. Leeds may well decide to take the matter further.
Talking exclusively to MOT Leeds News Robinson said, “He has a huge opportunity in front of him.
“I got my opportunity at his age, under different circumstances. Saying that, though, as a young keeper you generally don’t get your chance unless there are different circumstances.
“It’s a huge opportunity for him. I’m actually surprised he didn’t get it before given Casilla’s form but he’s got it now.
“He’s got an extended run of games and he’s now got to take his opportunity with both hands. He’s got a real opportunity to take the number one spot for the rest of the season and possibly beyond.”
Leeds fans will be very relieved that Meslier stepped up and looked so assured between the posts, although he wasn’t tested much by Hull.
Behind him is 18-year-old Elia Caprile, who hasn’t played any senior football, and that’s always going to be a worry.
However, Meslier does have a big chance to prove himself at Leeds and so far he’s passing the test with flying colours.
