‘Dramatic move’ reported after Friday PL meeting that could have major impact on Leeds promotion

The public message from the Premier League after the four-hour meeting on Friday was that it was business as usual and they would look to complete the 19/20 season – something that was great news for Leeds United.

However, the Mail has reported a “dramatic move” since then by the Big Six clubs, who fear the bottom clubs are trying to sabotage the restart to avoid relegation.

The Mail reported: “Sportsmail can reveal that some of the Big Six are lobbying for guarantees that promotion and relegation will still be implemented, even if the season is curtailed.

The dramatic move following last Friday’s shareholders’ meeting represents an attempt by the biggest clubs to persuade those in the bottom three to vote for playing on, as it would be their only hope of avoiding relegation.”

A vote of 14 of the 20 clubs in the Premier League is needed to agree the restart, which is currently planned for mid-June.

The Mail claims that this vote is currently on a knife-edge with one source telling them that 13 clubs are currently in favour, six against and one undecided.

However, they have said that another source has said that eight clubs could vote against the re-start of the season.

The Premier League itself is strongly behind the restart.

The Mirror reported on this issue too and they have claimed a similar split in the Premier League.

They claim that it’s the bottom six who are against the plan to re-start at the moment, which shows Brighton, West Ham, Watford, Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Norwich against playing at neutral venues.

We think this is a pretty clear case of shameful self-interest.

Losing home advantage is something that will affect every team in the same way. Trying to avoid relegation by forcing the season to be voided is against what football should stand for.

However, with the bottom six reportedly against plans, it’s only going to take one more team to side with them.

No relegation from the Premier League could have a major impact on Leeds United getting promoted – even if the Championship gets completed.

Thankfully, the Big Six are desperate to play out the season and their plan to implement relegation irrespective is brilliant news for Leeds.

And in a Premier League battle, we’d rather have our colours nailed to the mast of the Big Six.
