Dorigo stunned by ‘excellent’ Leeds moment v Coventry after what midfielder did

Tony Dorigo has waxed lyrical about Ethan Ampadu after he set up Dan James for a goalscoring chance in the first half of the Championship clash between Leeds United and Coventry City on Wednesday.

The Whites took a two-goal lead through Joel Piroe and Jayden Bogle, but could have extended their lead further through James as Ampadu found him in the box with a brilliant long-ball pass just after the half-hour mark on 5 February.

However, the Wales international could only hit the ball straight at the goalkeeper, leaving him annoyed at himself, as described by Dorigo.

The former Leeds star, though, was extremely impressed by Ampadu’s pass, which he described as “excellent” on live commentary.

“Should have been 3-0. What an excellent ball it was”, Dorigo said on LUTV (5 February, 8:17 pm).

“James, you can see, remonstrating with himself because he has scored goals like that before, hasn’t he, just lobbing it over the keeper and that one certainly was one that should have been in the back of the net.

Dorigo, meanwhile, praised James for his cleverness, although he thought the attacker should have made the most of the chance.

“Dan James has been clever because sometimes he goes on to [Jake] Bidwell, and then when he just drifts off him, he’s suddenly in between the centre-half and Bidwell, and that diagonal run, we saw him, of course, set up [Brenden] Aaronson for a goal against Cardiff, doing exactly that”, the pundit said.

Leeds United on course to beat Frank Lampard’s Coventry City

Nevertheless, the visitors are on course to earn a comfortable victory over Frank Lampard’s side away from home.

Much has been said about Leeds United’s lack of transfer business in the recently concluded winter transfer window, and Daniel Farke’s men are about to show that they are more than capable of earning promotion as Championship winners.

Ampadu has particularly been in fine form for the West Yorkshire outfit in the game so far, marshalling the defence while also spraying out amazing passes like he did for James.

Dorigo was stunned by the former Chelsea player’s reading of the game on another occasion in the first half, describing his ability as “brilliant”.

James, though, need not be concerned about missing the chance as he is certain to see more opportunities come his way, considering how well the Elland Road outfit have been playing.

The former Manchester United ace was one of the standout performers in Leeds’ 7-0 victory over Cardiff City on Saturday (1 February) and there is no reason why he cannot get himself on the scoresheet again.
